Ceyhun Ekşi and Cenk Ekşi, 23-year-old twin brothers living in Germany, regained their health with sleeve gastrectomy surgery performed by general surgery specialist Op. Dr. Türker Karabuğatarat in Izmir Private Sada Hospital.
Ceyhun Ekşi, weighing 200 kg, and Cenk Ekşi, weighing 195 kg, decided to have surgery because their health and daily lives were increasingly negatively affected due to their excess weight. The Ekşi brothers, who came to Izmir on the advice of a friend who had previously undergone sleeve gastrectomy surgery, were operated by general surgery specialist Op. Dr. Türker Karabuğa at Izmir Private Sada Hospital. Giving information about the operation, Op. Dr. Türker Karabuğa said, "Our two identical twin male patients reached us from Germany. Their Body Mass Index (BMI) was quite high. They had indices of 61.3 and 61.8, which we call 'Super Super Obesity'. The brothers, who had health problems and social problems, reached us with the persuasion of their families and decided to have surgery. Both of them underwent sleeve gastrectomy surgery. In patients at these weights, intra-abdominal adiposity and fatty liver disease increase significantly. We were not wrong in our predictions during the surgery. Although this situation made the surgery a little difficult, it ended successfully."
Surgical Experience is Important
Referring to the importance of the equipment used in the operations of such patients and the experience of the surgical team, Karabuğa continued as follows: "In this BMI level patient group, the laparoscopic instruments called trocars to be entered into the abdomen and the laparoscopic hand tools to be used must be long and suitable for the patient. Such surgeries should be performed by experienced physicians in fully equipped hospitals with a 3rd Step Intensive Care Unit, and in case of possible complications, it is important that both the surgeon performing the surgery is equipped in this regard and that the necessary branches are available. We completed our surgery successfully and without any problems. Of course, postoperative follow-up is as important as the surgery itself. We are working with an expert and experienced team. Our team helps our patients in a very experienced way before and after the operation."
Confidence in Surgery Increases
Noting that sleeve gastrectomy has been performed for about 30 years and obesity surgery for 70 years, Op. Dr. Türker Karabuğa said, "Complication rates have been slightly high until the last 10-15 years, but with the development of medical devices, advancement of technology and increased experience of surgeons, complications in obesity surgeries have decreased considerably and have become safer. There is something I always say: The complication rate of sleeve gastrectomy surgery is much less than gall bladder, hernia or appendicitis surgery. As long as the surgery is performed on the appropriate patient by an experienced surgeon and team."
